International Honors Opportunities

Major: Physics
"The program really allows you to branch out. It’s a nice balance to being a physics major, where I bond with my fellow majors because we all study the same thing. Socially, it’s a great way to meet people from all over the University. After freshman year, it allows you to challenge yourself by being the only non-major in courses designed for majors." International Track for Honors Program Students
The International Track for Honors Program Students consists of a combination of courses in a chosen language, study at a Notre Dame International Program sponsored and recommended by the Office of International Studies (OIS), and a research experience that involves the target language. The Recommended International Programs are listed below. Honors Program Students interested participating in the International Track are encouraged to enhance their competency in the target language by enrolling in language courses each semester during their first two years at Notre Dame. This will qualify them for direct enrollment programs in Paris, Bologna, and Puebla, for example, in which they take regular university courses with students from the host country. It will also prepare them for advanced language courses in the programs in China, Egypt, Japan and Russia. A participant in the International Track is asked to:
1) do research abroad in the target language in the summer after their study abroad, and
2) incorporate research from sources in the target language into the Senior Honors Thesis.
Admission to the Recommended International Programs is competitive. Successful applicants provide evidence of excellence as students in their major field of study, as students in the target language, and as residents on campus. Because of limited availability, the OIS cannot guarantee that Honors Program applicants will be admitted to the programs of their choice. However, the OIS will make every effort to accommodate qualified applicants.
A Word of Advice: If you take advantage of the International Track for Honors Students, you will be away from the Notre Dame campus for a semester or two. It is therefore important that you meet with your academic advisor as early as you can to discuss the time line for completing the requirements of your major (and any remaining university or college requirements that you still have to meet).
For Information about the Recommended International Study Programs as well as the Application Process and Deadlines, see http://www.nd.edu/~ois/.
