Name: Ziyuan (Jessica) Zhang

Major(s): Biology and Economics
Research Location: Beijing, China

Jessica spent her summer working as a Research Assistant at Tsinghua University in Beijing where she traced the sulfur cycle in soil, plants, and microbes. She specifically examined the impact of excessive Hydrogen sulfide on plants and microbes by analyzing the sulfur cycle through a review of existing literature. In the process, she identified several key functional gene groups in microbes that play a role in this cycle. Along with her mentor, Jessica is actively continuing this research.

Jessica says, "I genuinely enjoy the process of conducting research. Initially, I thought reading papers would be a laborious task, but the more I learned about the topic, the more I found myself enjoying it. Discussing my new insights and ideas with colleagues has led to stimulating exchanges that spark unexpected ideas, making the experience both rewarding and enjoyable. As an incoming sophomore, tackling research topics typically reserved for master's or doctoral students was certainly challenging. However, my mentor was incredibly patient and provided invaluable support throughout the journey."
